The South Western Coast - 'Le Morne'

The south coast is not typical of the picture postcard image of Mauritius and is a region of rugged and spectacular coastline of the island, with its high cliffs dropping sheer to the sea and blue lagoon. At the southern end of the village, on top of the cliff, is the popular view-point of Gris-Gris, where you never tire watching the rollers of the deep crashing in a roaring fury of white agaisnt the rugged cliffs.
It is the combination of magnifent mountain and sea sceneries that makes the west coast nothing short of magical. The entire coastline is diminated by Le Morne mountain, a natural monument evocative of slavery and symbolising freedom.

La Cote Sud Ouest - 'Le Morne'

La Cote Sud Ouest n'a rien des images de cartes postales typiques de Maurice. C'est une belle region accidentee aux contrastes marques. Contrastant avec les doux contours de la cote nord, la region a un littoral accidentee et spectaculaire avec les falaises tombant a pic dans la mer. Au point sud du village, du haut de la falaise, Gris-Gris est un belvedere populaire d'ou l'on peut regarder, sans jamais se lasser, la houle du grand large venir s'ecraser en une furie d'ecume contre la falaise.
La route sinueuse qui relie Souillac au Morne Brabant en longeant au plus pres la mer offre des paysages a vous couper le souffle ; le poete mauricien Robert Edward Hart l'a surnomme la voie enchantee.
La Magnifique combinaison de paysages de montagne et de mer fait de la cote ouest un lieu magique. La Montagne du Morne, qui evoque l'esclavage et symbolise la liberte, domine toute la region cotiere.

The inland beauty of Mauritius

Mauritius is in truth a garden of thousand contrasts all the more remarkable in so small a place. The nature lover will be overwhelmed by the haunting beauty of the island, from the quaint shapes of the mountains to the tropical luxuriance of the plunging gorges.
Black River Gorges National Park, situated near Le Morne, for instance, provides opportunities for the visitor to enjoy spectacular natural scenery and some of the unique endemic plants and birdlife. From Le Petrin, visitors can walk to Maccabee forest (7km return) or down the Gorges to Black River (15km). There are also a number of longer walking trails, including one to the island's highest point, Black River Peak (828m)Not to omit that ile aux Benitiers is just parallel to Le Morne.

Le Parc Nationale des Gorges de la Riviere Noire offre au visiteur la possibilite d'apprecier un site naturel spectaculaire et de voir des plantes et des oiseaux endemiques. On y retrouve aussi des parcours pedestres, dont l'un amene au Pic de la Riviere Noire (828m), point culminant du pays.
A noter que l'ile aux Benitiers se situe en parallel avec la cote Le Morne.

Music and Dance

The sega, a dance unique in Mauritius, is derived mostly from African music and dates back from slavery days. The dance itself is the rythmic swaying of the hips to the pulsating rhythm of the ravane.

La Musique et la Danse

Le sega, cette danse typiquement mauricienne, est inspire surtout de la musique africaine du temps des esclaves. La danse elle-meme, c'est un dehanchement en rythm avec le battement syncope de la ravane. Elle commence par un mouvement lent des hanches qui vont s'accelerer pour atteindre un crescendo grisant.
